The
Templo Mayor Museum opened its doors on October 12, 1987, and has received, so far, more than thirteen million visitors. Its creation was a consequence of the archaeological excavations carried out by the Templo Mayor Project in its first season, between 1978 and 1982, which were carried out under the direction of Eduardo Matos Moctezuma and allowed the recovery of a collection of more than 7 thousand objects, as well as the vestiges of the Templo Mayor of Tenochtitlan and some nearby buildings.
All this gave rise to the initiative to build a site museum to display said collection and, at the same time, complement the visit to the archaeological zone.
