El Cuyo

Private and authentic town.

Some claim it has the most beautiful and tranquil beach in the country. El Cuyo, the fishing town that was still used as a logging port until the past century.

Although it has been rarely explored, we can state that this is one of those places where visitors may find maximum relaxation, rest, and appreciation in the natural sceneries that rule among mangroves, the turquoise blue of the sea, and the tropical green of the petrified forest.

This national relic is two and a half hours from Cancun International Airport and three hours from Mérida; it is especially located in the Ra Lagartas reserve, between Holbox and Las Coloradas. It is home to hundreds of flamingos who come to the heat of the peninsula year after year to bask in the calm waves; turtles that deposit their eggs there; and many birds.

The majority of the wooden houses, which were erected more than 40 years ago, have not changed. There are no large hotels or housing complexes for mass tourists. They protect the seclusion and authenticity of the area, together with its less than three thousand residents.

There are tiny businesses where visitors and residents may stock up on necessities. There are around 20 restaurants, cafés, and bakeries where you may taste traditional Yucatecan or Mexican cuisine.

In terms of lodging, virtually all of the cabins set up for visitors feature hammocks, mattresses, separate bathrooms, and mosquito netting.

In addition to relaxing and enjoying excellent food, you may participate in one of El Cuyo's most popular activities: kitesurfing, paddle boarding, or kayaking.

Given its remoteness from the city, there are a few things to keep in mind before visiting El Cuyo: there are no ATMs or banks, and most places only accept cash. There are no specialist stores, and while some pharmacies do exist, if a certain medicine is necessary, you must drive by vehicle to Tizimn. The wireless network is adequate, although it may fail due to a lack of antennae in the region.

Finally, there are no nightclubs, however, there are cultural places where evenings with live groups are held (all in a very relaxed atmosphere).
