Description
Day 1: City Tour.
Walking tour of the historic city center in the company of an official guide, who will show you the details of the most iconic buildings: the Temple of Santo Domingo de Guzmán, the Zócalo, the tourist walkway, the Benito Juarez Market, and 20 de Noviembre. At the end of the day, you will be able to enjoy a tlayuda (a typical Oaxacan dish) along with a drink during dinner.
Day 2: We will start very early with a trip to the town of Mitla, an archeological site that exudes mysticism. In this community, you will take part in a special workshop on painting 'pan de muerto' (bread of the dead). You will discover the meanings behind each design and learn the traditional techniques used to decorate these delicious breads.
After visiting the town of Mitla, we will tour the Yagul Archaeological Zone and its ballcourt, described as one of the largest in the Oaxaca Valley.
Our third stop will be Teotitlán del Valle. Here, you will have the opportunity to experience the making of traditional chocolate and enjoy a tasting. Afterwards, we will visit a local workshop, where you will get a close-up look at the process of making these rugs, from dyeing the wool to the final weaving.
To round off this unique experience, we offer you a food tasting that showcases the authenticity of Oaxacan cuisine. It will feature traditional dishes prepared with fresh, local ingredients and the rich flavors that characterize this region. Of course, a demonstration of how artisanal mezcal is made, followed by a tasting, is a must.
Day 3: We will begin our day by exploring the fields where marigolds, the iconic flowers of the festival, are grown. Immerse yourself in the beauty of these fields, where you will learn about the symbolic meaning of these flowers, which are essential for creating the colorful ofrendas. We will then head to the local market, where you will have the opportunity to choose and purchase the essential items for your own ofrenda.
Our next stop will take us to a traditional house, where we will be welcomed with hospitality, a mug of chocolate atole, and some snacks, and we will also have the opportunity to admire a beautifully decorated family altar.
We will continue our journey to the Xoxocotlán Pantheon, a place where the atmosphere is imbued with spirituality and memories. Here, we will explore the graves decorated with flowers, candles, and offerings, while learning about the cultural and emotional significance of this place during the Day of the Dead celebrations.
Day 4: We will head to the town of Etla in the afternoon. Our first stop will be to learn about the making of the famous wooden alebrijes, and later, you will enjoy a hearty meal in the same area.
As night falls, we will head to the town center to join a traditional comparsa and enjoy a dinner of tamales, chocolate, and mezcal, returning around 12:00 a.m.
