Sian Ka'an Biosphere
This is the largest protected area in the Mexican Caribbean with approximately 1.3 million acres. Its name is translated from Mayan as 'where the sky is born' or 'gift from the sky'.World natural heritage
In 1987 was named by UNESCO a world heritage site. Part of the reserve is on land and part is in the sea, including a section of coral reef.
The area includes about 23 known Mayan archaeological sites.
In this reserve there are more than 150 mammal species and over 300 species of birds, indeed, it is the ground of many wading birds. It is home to two endangered sea turtle species and to over 2000 human inhabitants.
There are five entrances to the reserve, located at Pulticub, Santa Teresa, Chumpón, Chunyaxché, and Chac Mool. Guards employed by the governmental SEMARNAP organization are stationed at every entrance to enforce the reserve’s regulations.

Punta Allen
The largest village in the Sian Ka’an Biosphere located at the end of Boca Paila in the municipality of Tulum.
This is a small fishing village, an excellent place to relax and enjoy the view of watching the sunset surrounded by wildlife!
Bird-watching enthusiasts will enjoy seeing pelicans, pink spoonbills, frigates, mockingbirds, and vultures among others.
The Sian Ka’an Biosphere and Punta Allen attract fishermen from all over the globe.
