Description
Begin your trip in downtown Mexico City and take a scenic drive to Taxco, a hillside town with cobblestone streets, tile roofs, and historic squares that retain their colonial-era character. Visit Santa Prisca Church, one of Mexico's grandest churches, built in 1759 by French immigrant Jose de la Borda following the discovery of a rich silver vein.
Explore the world-famous silver mines and artisan shops that showcase Taxco's long tradition in silver craftsmanship. You will have the chance to admire and buy beautiful handcrafted silver pieces directly from Mexican artisans.
If selected, descend into an ancient pre-Hispanic mine using a mining elevator. Travel 150 meters through a well-lit tunnel where you will learn about the mining techniques and tools used by ancient inhabitants to extract precious metals before the Spanish conquest. Outside the mine, admire a mural by Juan O'Gorman dedicated to Mexico’s last Aztec emperor, created with local materials.
