Puech Ikots is an Indigenous art collective of 80 families based in Oaxaca, Mexico. The collective works to preserve their traditional artistic traditions, especially the creation of copal wood alebrijes, as popularized by the Disney movie Coco.
Every year, head artist Carlos Orozco travels to Chicago to host workshops where students learn to paint their own animal or mystical being alebrije in traditional Oaxacan style while also learning about Oaxacan culture, the sustainability practices of Indigenous peoples, and the beautiful artistic traditions of Mexico's Isthmus region. This year we are taking it virtually! Order ahead and paint along at home! Each student will receive a hand-carved small or medium alebrije to paint during this virtual class. Attendees can opt to pick up their alebrije or pay a shipping fee to have it delivered to their home. For folks who don't have acrylic paint and paintbrushes at home, we can mail those too!
All proceeds go directly to the Oaxacan families impacted by a coronavirus and recent natural disasters.
