In recent decades, bodily materialisation has become an emergent topic of enquiry in the social sciences and humanities. The question of how people have historically embodied themselves has reified the importance of mundane daily-life objects as agents in reframing the visual image of the human body. By crossing art with historical thinking, this event addresses the situated power of daily-artefacts to address wider corporal-cultural heritage in the Americas.
This event brings together the work of two young emerging artists based in the north and south of the Americas: the Dominican US immigrant Ernesto Rivera and the Argentine Julián Sorter. These video performances approach the role of objects with a strong historical background in the always troubled politics of self-representation. While primarily centred on gendered artefacts, both artistic pieces show how whitening, class, migration, masculinity and ageing are also embodied. During the Q&A, Patricio Simonetto will dialogue with the artists about the cultural background of their performances, and on how the synergy between academic and artistic work can strengthen the production of critical knowledge.
